Over the past 15 years, Dr. Nagel has been endeavoring to expand his knowledge base beyond the standards of conventional medical training. He has been doing this in an effort to integrate conventional and complementary therapies into his repertoire of medical treatments. His ultimate goal is to obtain optimal health and prevent disease.  He treats disease by addressing the underlying factors that cause the disease, while enhancing the bodies’ innate abilities to heal.

A few years ago, Dr. Nagel read an article in a medical journal written by Burt Berkson, M.D., Ph.D.  In the article, Dr. Berkson presented three reports of patients who had Hepatitis-C induced end-stage liver disease awaiting transplantation.  Dr. Berkson utilized a triple antioxidant formula along with therapeutic lifestyle changes.  In each case, his patients were able to get off the transplant list and return to work.

Dr. Berkson, located in Las Cruces, New Mexico, is one of the world’s foremost authorities on intravenous Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), is the principal FDA investigator for its intravenous use, and a consultant to the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  He has utilized Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) successfully for treatment of chronic liver disease, various cancers, and a number of autoimmune disorders. Furthermore, he has treated multiple sclerosis (MS) in combination with Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN).

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is an excellent antioxidant that recycles other nutrients such as Coenzyme Q 10, and Vitamins C and E.  In addition, Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) chelates heavy metals such as mercury, lead, and arsenic.  It also stabilizes NF Kappa B transformation factor, which helps to inactivate deleterious genes.  It can help people with diabetes mellitus by increasing the sensitivity of their cells to insulin, and helps reverse diabetic neuropathies.  There may be no stronger antioxidant than Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA).  This remarkable coenzyme, which occurs naturally in our bodies in abundance when we're young, gradually diminishes with age.  It may very well be one of our best defenses against disease and aging.

Here, at the Quality of Life Medicine, we provide therapies designed to complement those therapies provided by your personal physician or specialist, to enhance your innate abilities to heal. We utilize a comprehensive multimodal approach such as Therapeutic Life-Style Medicine, nutrition based therapies, nutraceutical supplementation, prescription medications when indicated, as well as intravenous nutritional therapies.  We also provided Therapeutic Lifestyle Intervention Programs, emphasizing a Patient Centered Approach to treatment rather than a Disease Centered Approach to treatment.
